Codeine-Containing Products

CODEINE-CONTAINING PRODUCTS
A number of conditions govern the sale, by pharmacists, of non-prescription codeine-containing products to the public. The obligations of pharmacists with respect to these products include the following:

  • The promotion or display of these products is not permitted.
  • As Schedule II drugs, the decision to sell these products must be made by the pharmacist, intern or registered pharmacy student under direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • If a pharmacist has reason to believe that these products will be used by a person for other than recognized medical or dental purposes, the pharmacist shall not sell them to that person.
  • It is illegal for pharmacists to import or export narcotic drugs, including non-prescription codeine-containing products.
