Compliance Aids
Jun 1993 Council Report
Mar/Apr 1997 Pharmacy Connection
In 1993, Council adopted a policy concerning use of compliance aids, such as the Dosett or Manrex system, that contain different compartments or plastic 'blisters' in which more than one kind of medication can be placed.
Given that compliance aids are of benefit to certain patients, and that requests for their use are on the increase, the College reviewed the matter wiht legal counsel and brought it to Council for reconsideration.
Council approved a policy permitting the dispensing of solid oral dosage forms in multi-medication compliance aids, subject to the following considerations:
- Use of such containers is subject to the pharmacist's discretion, according to individual patient needs.
- The regulation respecting the use of child-resistant packages must be followed (in this Regulation, the prescriber patient or patient's agent can request a non-child resistant package, or the pharmacist may apply professional judgement in child-resistant package use).
- The prescription label affixed to the container must clearly identify and describe the container's content.
- There must be compliance with the provision of the Prescription Drug Cost Regulation Act with particular reference to Section 9 (dispense the entire quantity of the drug prescribed).
Pharmacists should clearly assess which patients are appropriate when choosing this type of packaging, and do so with their patient's consent. Provision should also be made to promptly make any adjustments when required as a result of a change in drug therapy.
