Exam Eligibility


Graduation from an approved Pharmacy Technician Program in Ontario

1) Within three years of submission of the Application:
The following documents are required:
a) an original or certified true copy of a certificate or diploma issued by the community college or vocational school; OR
b) an original or certified true copy of a transcript confirming graduation; OR
c) a letter sent directly to OCP from one of the approved institutions verifying graduation from all components of the program (academic and practicum).

2) More than three years prior to submission of the Application
In addition to the above requirements, you are also required to submit documentation certifying a minimum of 200 hours of pharmacy technician experience in Ontario within the past six months. Verification of employment must be in the form of an original letter on company letterhead signed and dated by a pharmacist who is a member in good standing with OCP and who has supervised your work experience.

The letter must state:
a) the date that you began (and stopped, if applicable) employment at the pharmacy as a pharmacy technician; AND
b) confirmation that you worked the total minimum number of hours (200) within the specified time frame; AND
c) confirmation that you performed the functions outlined in the current Guidelines for the Pharmacist on the Role of the Pharmacy Technician approved by OCP

Graduation from a formal program outside Ontario

Graduation from a program outside of Ontario will be reviewed by a Technician Panel to determine if it is comparable to the programs approved by the Ministry of Education and Training of Ontario or meet the educational qualifications set by OCP. Applicants whose programs do not meet the eligibility criteria to sit the certification exam will be required to either successfully complete a program approved by the Ministry or meet the 'On-the-job-trained' requirement set by the College.

1) Pharmacy Technician/Assistant Program
The following documents are required:
- an original or
certified true copy of your certificate or diploma issued by the institution, AND
- a copy of the course calendar
or curriculum of study showing topics covered and number of hours of instruction, AND
- an employment letter(s) confirming pharmacy technician work experience in Ontario. Verification of employment must be in the form of an original letter on company letterhead signed and dated by a pharmacist who is a member in good standing with OCP and who has supervised your work experience.


The letter must state:
the date that you began (and stopped, if applicable) employment at the pharmacy as a pharmacy technician; AND
confirmation that you worked the total minimum number of hours (200) within the specified time frame; AND
confirmation that while you are/were employed at the pharmacy, you performed the functions outlined in the current Guidelines for the Pharmacist on the Role of the Pharmacy Technician approved by OCP

2) Pharmacist/Pharmacy Program
If you hold a pharmacy degree/certificate from outside Ontario, you must submit:
- an original or
certified true copy of the certificate issued by the institution, stating your degree, AND
- a copy of the course calendar or curriculum of study showing topics covered and number of hours of instruction,
AND
- an employment letter(s) confirming pharmacy technician work experience in Ontario. Verification of employment must be in the form of an original letter on company letterhead signed and dated by a pharmacist who is a member in good standing with OCP and who has supervised your work experience.


The letter must state:
the date that you began (and stopped, if applicable) employment at the pharmacy as a pharmacy technician; AND
confirmation that you worked the total minimum number of hours (200) within the specified time frame; AND
confirmation that while you are/were employed at the pharmacy, you performed the functions outlined in the current Guidelines for the Pharmacist on the Role of the Pharmacy Technician approved by OCP

On-the-job trained

1) Within three years of submission of the Application:
- if you are "
on-the-job-trained" and have been employed as a pharmacy technician performing the functions outlined in the current Guidelines for the Pharmacist on the Role of the Pharmacy Technician approved by OCP, you must submit:
- a letter confirming completion of a minimum of 3,500 hours (full-time or part-time) in Ontario. Verification of employment must be in the form of an original letter on company letterhead dated and signed by a pharmacist who is a member in good standing with OCP and who has supervised your work experience.
Each employment letter must state:

the date that you began (and stopped, if applicable) employment at the pharmacy as a pharmacy technician; AND
the average number of hours per week that you were employed as a pharmacy technician in the pharmacy, OR confirmation that you worked the total minimum number of hours (3,500) within the specified time frame; AND
confirmation that while you are/were employed at the pharmacy, you performed the functions outlined in the current Guidelines for the Pharmacist on the Role of the Pharmacy Technician approved by OCP.
