Prescription Transfers from Other Provinces
Jun 1999 Council Report
Jul/Aug 1999 Pharmacy Connection
Section 158 of the Drug and Pharmacies Reulation Act only permits a pharmacist in Ontario to dispense prescriptions issued by prescribers in other provinces if, in the professional judgement of the pharmacist, the patient requires the drug immediately. Such an order shall not be refilled. This prevents pharmacists in Ontario from accepting transfers from other provinces that do not meet the above criteria even though all other jurisdictions in Canada permit pharmacists to do so. Accordingly, Council approved, in principle, amendments to the Drug and Pharmacies Regulation Act and Regulations that would allow pharmacists to accept transfers from any province in Canada as well as fill prescriptions written by prescribers across Canada. The College will prepare proposed amendments to the legislation that will need to be approved before this recommendation is effective.
