Introduction of the Bridging Education Program for Pharmacy Technicians is continuing. All four courses are now available for classroom delivery. Professional Practice is currently available on-line. Pharmacology and Drug Distribution will be available on-line in Spring 2010 and Product Preparation will follow in the summer.
Note: Although there may be limited spaces available at this time, these courses will be offered ongoing for the next five to seven years, along with the additional required courses for the Bridging Program for Pharmacy Technicians. Access will also increase throughout 2009 (see below).
Who – The proposed Registration Regulation states that all pharmacy technicians who are currently in the profession (i.e. graduates of programs prior to, or without CCAPP accreditation, or on-the-job trained) and who wish to pursue OCP registration, must complete the approved Bridging Education Program.
Note: eligibility requires completion of the OCP certification exam OR PEBC evaluating exam first. Click here for more details.
What – The Bridging Program consists of four courses (including an onsite practice evaluation of the “independent double check” for product release). It is designed to provide pharmacy technicians with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the expectations of the expanded role that regulation will allow. Click here for a brief description of the courses.
When – Introduction of the courses began in fall 2008 with the Professional Practice course. The Pharmacology course was introduced in the winter 2009 session and the remaining two courses were introduced later in 2009. Full roll-out of the program, including on-line, affiliated college and corporate delivery models is expected by early 2010.
Where – The courses are being offered by the Continuing Education Department of those community colleges with a CCAPP accredited Pharmacy Technician Education Program. (As of fall 2008, this includes Centennial, Fanshawe, Humber, Lambton, Niagara, Sheridan, St. Clair) Click here for more details.
Access to all courses will continue to increase throughout 2010, with the addition of affiliated community college delivery starting in the New Year (for communities that are outside the catchment area of the accredited community college programs). On-line course delivery is expected by early 2010. More details will be provided when available.
