Diagnostic Devices: Selling requirements

The College has given consideration to a number of issues arising from the sale of diagnostic devices as well as their use in pharmacy. No legal barrier exists in either current or anticipated professional legislation with respect to the sale of such devices in pharmacies. Council agreed that pharmacists should be informed that any test involving an invasive procedure (such as letting of blood) does not fall within the scope of practice of the pharmacist.

Furthermore, in the opinion of the College solicitor, the carrying out of invasive procedures in the profession of pharmacy exposes pharmacists to inherent risks and legal liability. Notwithstanding this opinion, instruction in the use of devices which may possibly include minor invasion (such as instruction in the use of a glucometer would be permissible.
