Aids Education
Council adopted a report by the AIDS Education Working Group, which was struck in October 1991 to study can make recommendations regarding the pharmacist's role in reducing transmission of the HIV virus. The Group focused on the following issues:
- the sale and safe disposal of needles and syringes;
- the appropriate marketing and use of condoms;
- the special needs of AIDS patients.
The following recommendations were adopted by Council:
- College policy regarding the sale of needles and syringes by pharmacists should be broadened to encourage the provision of devices to individuals who are at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, such as injection drugs users.
- information on the safe disposal of used needles, and current needle exchange programs, should be made available to pharmacists, and
- a workshop on the promotion and use of condoms should be developed and included as a component of the College's District Educational Meeting Program.
