At its December 12 meeting, Council was unanimous in its support of requiring mandatory reporting of pharmacy related medication incidents to an external third party. The College subsequently established a task force comprised of public, patient advocate, pharmacy technician and pharmacist members to examine this subject and develop a recommended model for implementation.
Recommendations from the task force to develop a continuous quality assurance program, including mandatory incident reporting to a third party, were presented at the March 20, 2017 Council meeting. Council unanimously supported the task force’s recommendations and has authorized the College to begin public consultation to help determine the critical factors that will support a successful rollout of the proposed program across the province.
The College is promptly moving forward public consultation. The proposed program will be available online for public input from March 31 to May 1, 2017. The College will then provide an update at the June 2017 Council meeting with the intent of moving forward with a phased in implementation subject to Council approval.
The College will post updates on its public website as this project moves forward.
