The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) has released new standards on non-sterile compounding:
- The Model Standards for Pharmacy Compounding of Non-Sterile Preparations
- Guidance Document for Pharmacy Compounding of Non-Sterile Preparations
College Council adopted the Model Standards for Pharmacy Compounding of Non-Sterile Preparations at their meeting in December 2017. Following this approval, the College is currently working towards establishing an appropriate implementation plan and date. The guidance document, separate from the standards, has been developed to provide direction on and assistance with implementation.
Model standards represent the minimum requirements that must be met regardless of practice site and against which performance can be measured. The guidance document accompanying the standards provides pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who compound non-sterile preparations with the details necessary to evaluate their practice, develop service-related procedures, and implement appropriate quality controls for both the protection of patients and compounding personnel.
The College will provide further guidance on implementation in the coming months. In the meantime, pharmacies and pharmacy professionals that perform non-sterile compounding are encouraged to review the standards against their current practice to identify any gaps.
