Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) in health care settings requires the consistent application of evidence-based practices and procedures that can prevent or reduce the risk of transmission of microorganisms to health care providers and patients.
To ensure the proper conditions of sanitation for drug preparation and storage, and to maintain a healthy environment for the public, pharmacies should have IPAC measures in place to minimize the risk of disease transmission from the pharmacy environment. In addition, hospitals are required by regulations under the Public Hospitals Act to establish a committee to oversee an infection control program.
Pharmacy professionals are also encouraged to stay informed with their Public Health Unit, which establishes programs to control diseases of public health significance and implements standards set by the Ministry of Health in accordance with the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA).
