Operating a Hospital Pharmacy

Hospital pharmacies must operate within the applicable legislation, regulations, Standards of Operation and policies/guidelines. Hospital leadership and pharmacy management may wish to review the following information regarding operating a hospital pharmacy:

  • Pharmacy Accreditation Renewal Process. All accredited pharmacies in Ontario must complete an application for renewal of their Certificate of Accreditation annually, on or before May 10.
  • Hospital Pharmacy Operational Assessments. During a hospital pharmacy assessment, a College hospital operations advisor reviews the hospital pharmacy’s operations. The assessment is designed to ensure the hospital pharmacy is adhering to hospital operations standards and has the proper processes and procedures in place.
  • Relocating an Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy Primary Location. Relocating an existing hospital pharmacy to a new address is equivalent to opening a new hospital pharmacy and requires the issuance of a new Certificate of Accreditation.
  • Hospital Pharmacy Renovations. The College should be notified when there is any material change to the size or physical layout of an existing accredited hospital inpatient primary pharmacy location, or if the hospital inpatient primary pharmacy location is moving to a new location at the same municipal address.
  • Closing a College Accredited Hospital Pharmacy. Operators who wish to permanently close an accredited hospital pharmacy must notify the College prior to the proposed closing date and file a closing statement detailing the disposition of narcotics and controlled drugs, prescription and non-prescription drugs and patient records.
