Only College registrants or those enrolled in a pharmacy education program can perform the controlled acts of the profession.

On October 1, the College eliminated the student class of registration. Although those enrolled in a pharmacy education program can no longer register with the College as a student, there has been no impact to their scope of practice.

If you are enrolled in a pharmacy education program, you can continue to engage in any of the controlled acts within the scope of the pharmacy profession – including dispensing, selling and compounding drugs, and administering injections – under the supervision of a Part A pharmacist. For a list of the controlled acts, refer to the Legal Scope of Practice and Authorized Acts for Pharmacy resource.

If you do not hold a Certificate of Registration or are not enrolled in a pharmacy education program, you cannot perform the controlled acts of the profession. Only registrants (Part A pharmacists, including Emergency Assignment pharmacists, and interns) or those enrolled in an educational program for the purposes of fulfilling the requirements to become a pharmacist can engage in the scope of practice of a pharmacist, including administering injections.

OCP’s policy on Medical Directives and the Delegation of Controlled Acts sets out the College’s expectations for registrants considering the delegation of a controlled act. As a reminder, delegation should only occur if it is clinically appropriate and in the patient’s best interests.
