Health Quality Ontario has published three new quality standards on opioids that outline for clinicians and patients what high quality care looks like for:
- Identifying and Treating Opioid Use Disorder
- Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain
- Prescribing Opioids for Acute Pain
These also offer guidance to healthcare professionals on how to avoid suddenly discontinuing prescription opioids so that patients do not turn to street sources for drugs.
Quality standards are developed in collaboration with patients with lived experience, physicians, nurses, caregivers and organizations across the province and are based on the best available evidence.
